Sheffield is blessed with hundreds of unique local businesses that make up the ecosystem of our city’s economy. We try to work with as many of our fellow Sheffield businesses as possible, in both a business and pleasure capacity. Supporting local Sheffield entrepreneurs matters in the age of one-click Amazon.
In this blog, we wanted to showcase four Sheffield companies thriving as independent entities. These local businesses offer something that a big-chain corporation cannot.
Freshmans Vintage Store
Freshmans Vintage Store is an independent second-hand clothes shop in Sheffield. It’s the original Sheffield vintage shop.
Located on Carver Street (opposite Crystal Bar), Freshmans has been dressing the city’s student population- and locals- since 1996. Some would say it’s a proper Sheffield institution.
The store is awash with vintage denim, and you can search the racks for pre-loved pieces from the likes of Levi’s and Wrangler. Buying from Freshmans means you’re supporting an independent Sheffield business and purchasing a sustainability product too.

Rhyme and Reason
Rhyme and Reason have been part of the Sheffield community for over two decades, so they rightly deserve to be part of our list. In the words of Rhyme and Reason: ‘Aladdin’s cave in Hunter’s Bar. Come to us for all your literary needs!’
This little bookshop, just past Ecclesall Road, specialises in children’s books, but hidden away, you’ll also find a plethora of adult fiction, non-fiction and poetry. You can even sign up for a regular book group if you want to be part of a community and meet new people.

MoonKo
Moonko is a beautiful independent store located on Division Street. Demand is so high for artist and former teacher Deborah Back’s hand-tied dried flower posies, prints and jewellery that she often struggles to keep up with demand.
Now into their 12th year, MoonKo’s products are all handmade. In the words of Deborah, “All our products are made to the highest standards, by ourselves (mainly me) and other independent makers, using eco & environmental conscious materials, being as kind to the planet as possible.

Bullion Chocolate
We have an incredible sweet tooth here at SDP Student Homes, so we’re a big fan of Sheffield’s very own ‘bean-to-bar’ (importing cocoa beans and making chocolate from scratch) chocolatier’s Bullion Chocolate. We’ve got craft beer and coffee, so why not chocolate?
Bullion are bringing a new take on chocolate to Sheffield, and we’re all for it. Max Scotford, the founder of Bullion Chocolate added: “I feel most people are barely scraping the surface when it comes to chocolate. The chocolate we’ve come to expect is so far from what it could be. For years the true flavours of cacao have been masked in order to create a product, which is a consistent sweet fix for the masses.
Bullion also offers the opportunity of a chocolate factory tour. No golden ticket needed!
