How much stuff should you bring to Uni?
As the big move to Sheffield gets closer, or you are returning for a 2nd, 3rd or 4th year, it’s important to think about what you should bring with you. You can’t bring everything with you, but you need to bring the things that are essential and important to you.
Here’s our guide and a few rules to think about as you plan what’s coming with you and what’s not.
Clothes
There is a really clear rule for whether you should bring a certain item of clothing with you to university: If you don’t wear it at home, you probably won’t wear it anywhere else. If you haven’t worn it that year then you’ll probably think it’s out of style anyway. And remember, a lot of time you’ll be living in your dressing gown.
It is incredible tempting to dump your entire life in a suitcase, then into your Mum and Dad’s car and bring it up to Sheffield. Think about the space that you have to work with. Do you want your first proper space to be cluttered before you even begin?
Before you bring every item of clothing you have ever owned, there are several vintage clothes shops in Sheffield that you may like such as Vulgar, Freshmans and Cow. If you miss any of your clothes, just bring it up next time and then you’re not moving it twice.
Toiletries
There’s not much point in buying a range of toiletries that are difficult to transport. Bring everything you think is absolutely essential, but be smart about how much you can move in a couple of trips. Buying toiletries when you get to Sheffield will also give you a chance to find a shop to supply you with toiletries throughout the year.
Car
You are moving to a proper city in Sheffield. A big city with fantastic public transport links. This might not be what you want to hear, but you probably won’t need a car, and you won’t feel any less independent. Don’t get us wrong, it is nice to have a car, of course, and you are more than welcome to bring it, but is it really worth the hassle and expense for you. Petrol or pints?, that is the question.
Instead of just giving you a generic checklist like many other student accommodation providers we think it’s smart to think and plan ahead on when you are going to arrive in Sheffield.
If you are getting to Sheffield a few days before your studies start then you might want to bring as much as possible. But, if you are coming a few weeks early to get settled in then why not buy everything in Sheffield.
Items to decorate your room can be purchased all round the city, but bring personal momentos that remind you of home with you.
