3 Completely Free Afternoons Out in Sheffield
Students have always known how to make use of a budget. Making £20 stretch into the ‘weekly big shop’ is no problem for young adults in higher education. The country at large could learn a thing or two from the student population when it comes to being thrifty, especially as the price of everything is surging. Inflation seems to be out of control. The only thing better than cheap right now is free: that’s why we’ve researched three completely free places in Sheffield, where the only thing you’ll need to spend is your time.
The Millenium Gallery
The Millenium Gallery is probably one of the most impressive galleries in the north of England.
Opened in 2001, The Millenium Gallery is listed as one of the 15 most visited free attractions in England by Visit England. The glass building is situated opposite the Central Library, Graves Gallery and Hallam University.
Currently, the temporary exhibition is Where we Live, which runs from January to June 2022. The permanent exhibition, the Ruskin Collection, is one of the gallery’s highlights. This collection includes watercolours, drawings, prints, illustrated books, manuscripts, and coins from different time eras.
The Millenium Gallery, Weston Park, and Graves Gallery make up Sheffield Museums, and all three places offer something different to art lovers. Visit Sheffield Museum’s Youtube channel and blog to be kept up to date with what’s going on and where.
Open Daily 10 am – 5 pm
48 Arundel Gate, Sheffield City Centre, Sheffield S1 2PP

Botanical Gardens
As the weather gets a bit better, we think the Botanical Gardens is a great place to visit. You could easily chill here all day with a picnic and a good book.
The Grade-II listed site has a beautiful 19-acre botanical garden, which showcases more than 5,000 species of plants. This is a lovely spot for a stroll, especially in the spring and summer, when many plants are in full bloom. It’s just beautiful to be here and feels very relaxing.
Within the Botanical Garden, you’ll find The Curator’s House, an independent café bistro. The Curator’s House is open every day for breakfast, lunch, homemade cake, cream teas, coffee, snacks and ice cream. The food and drink won’t be free, but we can’t do anything about that.
Open Daily 8 am – 4 pm, 10 am – 4 pm on Weekends,
Clarkehouse Rd, Broomhall, Sheffield S10 2LN

Millhouses Park
In south Sheffield, Millhouses Park is the place to embrace your inner child and have a full-on day out in the sun with your mates.
The main attraction is a boating lake, but you can also expect a skate park, tennis courts, bowling, putting green and a basketball court. It’s probably not as scenic as the Botanical Gardens, but there is more to do.
Millhouses Park Café overlooks the boating lake at the heart of Millhouses Park, where the cafe’s produce is mainly sourced from local suppliers.
In keeping with our theme, there is no admission charge, and Millhouses park is open all day.
